CIE Members came together on 7th July in an extremely positive mood for the organisation’s Summer Meeting and General Assembly, reflecting both positive market trends and the growing influence of CIE on European policy.

The meeting heard from CIE President Tony Grimaldi (Cycleurope), CEO Kevin Mayne and the chairs of CIE’s Expert groups who are leading industrial developments in topics from sustainability to market intelligence.

Highlights of the CIE Board’s report to members included increases in cycle use, in business confidence and the membership of the organisation which has jumped a further 31% in the past year. Recent new members included global giant Specialized and Cyclis, the largest cycle leasing company in Belgium, showing that the organisation is delivering on its mission to represent both services and suppliers in the industry. Reflecting the work done by CIE to support members and to build cycling levels during the COVID crisis 94% of CIE members are now reporting that they intend to take on staff in the next two years, reflecting the current confidence of the membership.

As an example of how expert groups are collaborating to promote key growth areas in the market the Bike Sharing Expert Group showed a video that the members had made to support their campaign for bike sharing in every city in Europe, the type of advocacy and promotional campaign that could be repeated for other business areas.

This commitment to CIE development was also seen in elections to the CIE Board. CIE was founded in 2018 with six core companies setting up the association (Accell, PON, WTB, Cycleurope, SRAM and Nextbike). For the 2021-2023 period the Board is expanded to 11 members, which now includes Trek, Decathlon, MotionLab, Donkey Republic and MCF Corporate Finance, bringing in new areas of expertise such as developing innovation and attracting investors in the industry.

The Board unanimously elected Tony Grimaldi to continue as President for a further two years. Thanking members for their confidence he said “This is a really positive time for our industry and I am confident that working together with the Board, the members and the CIE staff we can build on what we have achieved in the last year.”
