Cycling Industries Europe’s Expert Group on Bike Share was launched on 25 June at Velo-city conference in Dublin. Eight leading European Bike Share Operators and Suppliers including PBSC, Jump by Uber, nextbike, Donkey Republic, Smoove, Moventia, Ride on and Mobike form the founding members of the group. Providing a solution to multiple key challenges faced by cities today such as traffic congestion, air pollution, climate change, noise, inactivity, public spaces invaded by cars - there’s a momentum for bike share and the sector is growing. The group’s ambition is to create a voice for the bike sharing industry in Europe and to bring shared, active, low carbon mobility to European cities.
The group has started its work by collecting data to facilitate collaborative research. Other priorities include work on common European standard, safety & quality standards, interoperability and sharing of best practice. The aim is to work in partnership with cities in order to simplify procedures, to make bike sharing and its benefits more visible and to take actively part in shaping the active mobility agenda in Europe.
Operating in more than 300 cities with 63 million journeys covered in 2018 in Europe the Expert Group forms a powerful advocacy for the sector. The bike share sector is expected to grow from the current 3-5 vehicles per 1000 residents in major European cities to 10-20 vehicles per 1000 residents in the next five years representing a growth of 20-30% per year.
