After a head-to-head with the two runners-up Geovelo and Mobiel 21, Onsee was announced the winner of the Smart Pedal Pitch competition at Velo-city 2021 in Lisbon. They presented a cyclist near miss prevention dashcam, REBO, which not only actively prevents near misses on road journeys through behavioural change, but also allows cyclists to capture dangerous incident details (video footage, plate numbers, time, date, location) with just a click of the handlebar button. The aggregated data are used to detect and generate cycling near miss hot spot maps to feed into infrastructure planning to stop near misses and collisions from happening.

As winner of the competition, Onsee will have the possibility to run an extended “proof of concept” for its innovation on the streets of Lisbon for 6 months, backed by a full package of innovation support from local and international partners. On the other hand, the 10 innovative companies that participated into the pitch will get 15 months free membership of CIE’s Cycling Innovation Network, the international support network for cycling innovators, start-ups and entrepreneurs.

After the first edition of 2019 in Dublin, the Smart Pedal Pitch was back in Lisbon at Velo-city 2021. The international cycling innovation competition was hosted by the Lisbon City Council, the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF), Cycling Industries Europe (CIE), the Bicycles and ITS Project (BITS) and Casa do Impacto.

The Smart Pedal Pitch aimed at gathering the most innovative and market-ready cycle tech solutions to shape the future of cycling in cities. Out of 30 entries, 10 shortlisted companies had the opportunity to pitch their ideas to an international panel of judges from the cycling and tech world, including ECF, Lisbon City Council and Casa do Impacto representatives.

The presentations were judged on different criteria such as relevance, scalability, innovation and presentation creativity. To win the competition, each proposal had to address one of the following four areas: seeking better data, promoting safer cycling, cycle security, and logistics and Intelligent Transport System on cycling. Onsee, Geovelo and Mobiel 21 were selected by the jury to get into the final and pitch their innovative solutions in front of Velo-city plenary where the audience was able to vote who convinced them the most.

The competition itself turned out to be a winner, putting at the centre smart cycling. It was very exciting to see the innovation potential of 10 cycle tech companies competing in front of a global audience and a jury formed by key influencers in cycling policy. Cycling is not only more and more considered as one of the solutions to reduce the CO2 emissions of our cities, but it’s gaining ground as a future technology that can integrate into the cutting edge of smart mobility.
