Supporting and accelerating sector growth

With the support of the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF), CIE has launched its Market Impact and Intelligence Expert Group (MIIEG) to contribute to the information and market intelligence needs of the cycling industry. There is a clear lack of aggregated cycling and cycling-related data sets at the EU-level. Yet this data is essential for effective policy-making, attracting private and public investment and guiding the sector both in terms of COVID-recovery and long-term strategies.

The main questions that will guide the work of the Expert Group are related to growth, sustainability and impact of cycling and its emerging markets – including such diverse topics as growth forecasting in different countries, how investment influences growth, the impact of new technologies and multi-modality on cycle use, and e-mountain bike bans effect on mountain bike use. The MIIEG will collect and analyze this data following a structured approach, in order to get a comprehensive picture of how markets are changing and will change across the EU, and which countries should be prioritized to stimulate growth in our sector. In this way, the Expert Group aims to shape the market intelligence needs of the industry for the future.

Not only will this be a powerful service for our members, complimenting the sales reporting already done by the Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry (CONEBI), but also extremely useful for public bodies, academics and civil society. They need better data to improve policies and research, to make investments in cycling more effecting and to strengthen advocacy activities where they are most needed. Hence the importance of creating an Expert Group that will benefit both of these stakeholder groups. Through its work, the MIIEG aims to become a European leader in terms of cycling data collection and analysis, supporting and accelerating the growth of our members and the industry.
