Coordinator and social inclusion expert for BicipubliCartago: the first public bike sharing system connected to intermodal transport hubs in Central America. The goal: promote active mobility and safer streets in the city by designing and building three bike rental stations (the first in Costa Rica), designing the bikes, an educational campaign and developing other urban acupunctures related to the newly constructed bike path. Project implemented by A-01 with the Municipality of Cartago and the Dutch Embassy between 11/2013 and 10/2014. On December 1st, 2014 the project received an honourable mention for sustainable construction from the Chamber of Construction in Costa Rica for its sustainable design approach.
Coordinator and gender expert for the Gender Responsive Baseline study for the Transport Emission Mitigation Project MiTransporte from GIZ. Realisation of a gender focused telephone survey (more than 1000 respondents) about the perception of the population regarding public transport in the Great Metropolitan Area of San Jose. Completed with Focus Group Discussions and a Stakeholder Workshop. A website was made with the results, including links to the final report, survey results and video statements from the different stakeholders. Study done by A-01 with CPSU for GIZ, 08-11/2018.
Coordinator / main investigator of the feasibility study to provide technical guidelines for the implementation of a public bike rental system in San José. Based on an on-site survey with potential users; semi-structured interviews with civil society, public and private stakeholders; review of secondary sources and a GIS mapping. A SWOT-analysis was done to identify the strengths and weaknesses of public bicycle systems implemented in different parts of the world, especially in Latin American cities and the opportunities and threats in the Costa Rican context. Moreover, the most strategic bike rental points in San José were identified, as well as complementary needs and important incentives to increase the possibilities of the use of the bicycle system. Assignment conducted by A-01 for the Municipality of San Jose, 10/2017-03/2018.
Coordinator and Cycling Expert for the La Fortuna en Dos Ruedas project: implementation of the proposals developed y A-01 during a pre-feasibility study on the possibility to implement an integrally sustainable bicycle-oriented mobility system in La Fortuna, Arenal that includes elements of the 4Es: Engineering (bike sharing stations and infrastructure; urban interventions), environment (promoting the use of non-motorized transport to bring down pollution), economy (stimulating a local BikEconomy) and Equity (generating a local culture that appropriates itself of the bike as a healthy, less time consuming and more equitable means of transport). Currently the bi-directional separated bicycle lane is being designed by A-01. Project is being developed with MOPT, CONAVI, COSEVI, ADIFORT, Municipality of San Carlos and Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. Since 01/2016.
Lead investigator and editor for the study and publication on sustainable cities: interviews and photography from cities worldwide. Presented at UN-HABITAT’s World Urban Forum in Naples, Italy on September 3, 2012. Topics included are amongst others: social integration, violence and citizen security, mobility, poverty, slum upgrading, equity housing, gender and urban development. Conducted by A Foundation with support from Cordaid Urban Matters, 09/2010-09/2012.
