That is why ECI has officially joined a cross-industry coalition (led by LightingEurope) and signed a joint letter to ensure the upcoming European Product Act protects both riders and compliant businesses.

Fraudulent and non-compliant e-bike imports have become a consistent fixture in custom authorities’ radar, with some recent operations intercepting tens of thousands of smuggled โ€˜e-bikesโ€™ at once. However, this isnโ€™t just about unpaid duties. When vehicles bypass power/speed restrictions, or when they use substandard batteries, user and road safety are jeopardised and the risk of fires increases.

The current EU regulatory framework allows these products to flood the internal market without a designated responsible person to answer for their safety (and lack thereof).

Together with our coalition partners, we are urging the EU to:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Mandate a clearly identified economic operator within the EU for every product sold, who is legally responsible for safety and compliance.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Recognize online marketplaces as the responsible economic operator if no other EU-based liable actor exists.

We must act now to safeguard the technical integrity of our vehicles and defend the industrial resilience of the European cycling sector. If your organisation wishes to stand with us and join this critical initiative, please reach out to sign on!
