Several start-ups are seizing business opportunities by addressing in the digital gaps across the cycling value chain, from supply chain operations to enhancing bicycle identification and connecting retailers, riders, insurers and other service providers.
On 28 January 2025, Cycling Industries Europe was proud to showcase companies shaking up this space and delivering digital solutions for the cycling industry. The webinar gave the floor to four start-ups from Poland, Denmark, Germany and Norway developing new solutions to bridge the ‘data gap’ in the cycling industry, who shared their insights, stories and perspectives to an audience of almost 150 industry insiders, investors, policy makers and city representatives.
Presentations highlighted the potential benefits for users, retailers and brands, why digitalisation is a ‘must-have’ to create a more circular and sustainable cycling ecosystem, and how lessons can be drawn to create more transparency across supply chains. The rise of bicycles as an essential part of day-to-day mobility in Europe is effectively creating opportunities and demand from users, retailers, brands, service providers and even regulators to access more consistent, reliable and transparent data about bicycles and their components.
The webinar, which can be streamed here, featured:
- How can a global and unique identifier for bicycles unleash new business opportunities?
with Bartek Czerwinski, Bicycle Identification Number - Connecting the bicycle to Danish society and insurance companies,
with René Nørgård', Bikekey - Seamless data exchange across the cycling supply chain,
with Anna Buchmann, NOCA - How the bicycle digital passport can give superpowers to retailers, brands and users
with Sondre Norland, BikeFolder
These emerging needs were highlighted back in 2022 by CIE in the ‘Bridging the gap’ report, which called for the development of standards for data exchange, more transparent supply chain data, the capacity to forecast raw material needs and ultimately a cultural shift in the industry based building trust via better data.
